Welcome to Episode 71 of the Emotional Eats Podcast!

In today’s solo episode, I am sharing a trend I’ve observed with my clients—a struggle to meet their health goals, but for unexpected reasons. Many women find themselves sabotaging their progress and losing focus on their own needs, and I believe this is rooted in a lack of a clear sense of self or identity, especially after going through the significant life changes of midlife and menopause.

As women, we often create roles and identities that don’t necessarily align with who we truly are or our core values. Whether it’s being a mom, a professional, or even the “fixer” in our social circles, these roles can become intertwined with our self-worth.

When these roles shift or disappear—such as when kids leave the nest, change careers, or we retire—we can feel lost and unsure of who we are without them. This can lead to emotional eating, stress, and ultimately, sabotaging our health goals.

Throughout this episode, I share my personal experiences and insights on how these identity shifts have affected my own journey. I open up about the challenges and the importance of reconnecting with who you truly are.  I give examples of roles so you can see how you identify with different identities in your life.

I discuss how emotional eating can be a response to these identity shifts and questions. When we don’t feel strong in our sense of self, we may turn to food for comfort, using it to fill a void that’s not really about hunger. I talk about the importance of authenticity—living true to your values and standards—and how this can help you break free from self-sabotaging behaviors.
